STRING NOTES AND REGULATIONS
In addition to the following discipline specific information, please refer to the general rules and regulations.
20TH/21ST CENTURY COMPOSERS: Music of the 20th/21st Century.
BAROQUE COMPOSERS: Music of the Baroque period, circa 1600-1760.
CANADIAN COMPOSERS: For extensive listings of music by Canadian composers, refer to the Contemporary Showcase Syllabus www.acnmp.ca

CLASSICAL COMPOSERS: Music of the Classical period, circa 1760-1825. Where there are two classes for Classical era compositions, one class
is for sonata/sonatina/divertimento movements only and the other is for all other compositions from the Classical era (e.g. bagatelles, theme &
variations).
CONCERTO: Concerto classes are understood to include concerto, concertino and multi-movement concerted works. Movements from these works
must be entered in Concerto classes.
GRADE/LEVEL: Repertoire graded by RCM/CC must be performed at the grade(s)/level(s) listed in their current syllabi. Ungraded repertoire should
be equal in difficulty to graded repertoire performed in the same class(es).
RECITAL GROUP: Three selections by one or more composers. No sonata or concerto movements. Participants will be adjudicated on the selection
of the group; technique, style, and interpretation. The purpose of this class is to provide an opportunity for students to prepare and perform a recital
program in public. Participants will receive adjudication only. Time limits must be observed.
REPEATS: In sonata and concerto classes, repeats are NOT to be played. Repeats in other classes are to be used at the discretion of the
student/teacher. Da capo markings are to be observed.
ROMANTIC COMPOSERS: Music of the Romantic Period, circa 1825-1900. The
SELECTION: Unless otherwise indicated in THIS syllabus, the word selection refers to:
 One piece by a composer, and not two or more short pieces from a collection or cycle.
 One movement of a larger work such as a suite.
SONATA: Sonata classes are understood to include sonata, sonatina and divertimento. Movements from these works must be entered in Sonata
classes.
TUNING: Participants may have their instruments tuned by a teacher or other person.
